Welcome!!!! My topic is about fractions. I will be explaining the following topics, naming fractions, equivalent fractions and comparing fractions.
Naming Fractions
We use fractions every day in our lives. Sometimes without even noticing it. The first rule of fraction you must have even parts. Types Of Fractions Common/ Proper Fractions- Fractions that have a smaller number as the numerator and the a larger number as the denominator [eg. 3/4] Improper Fractions- Fractions that have a larger number as the numerator and a smaller number as the denominator [eg. 7/9] Mixed Fractions- Fractions that have a common fraction and a whole number [eg. 2 3/4] Whole number- Fractions that are equal to a whole number [eg. 8/8] Let’s see if you were paying attention: Q.1) Figure out what type of Fractions these are a) 6/8 b) 7/4 c) 6/3 d) 8 3/4 e) 5/7 f) 4/4 g) 4/3 h) 2 6/8 i) 9/5 EquivalentFractions
Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value as another [eg. 2/4, 1/2, 3/6] these may not seem very necessary but they are a very handy skill in life to know. Equivalent fractions, like all others, have equal parts
Did you get that? Let’s give the following questions a go.
Q1) Fill in the missing numbers in the following questions. [All of them are equivalent fractions]
a) 3/5 = -/10 b) 2/2 = 4/- c) 7/10 = -/20 d) 8/- = 16/20 e) -/7 = 6/14
Comparing Fractions
Which is bigger 6/8 or 4/6? It’s hard to tell. First you need to find the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD), in this case it is 24 ( 8x3 and 6x4), and the 2nd rule for fractions is what you do to the bottom you have to do to the top. So in this case it would end up as 18/24 and 16/24. 6/8 is the biggest in this situation Did you get all that? Give it a go yourself Q1) Which is bigger a) 3/4 or 5/6 b) 6/8 or 7/9 c) 4/8 or 14/25 d) 2/5 or 5/15
Revision
Give these a go!
Q1) What are the 3 types of fractions and give an example? Q2) What type of fraction is this? a) 8/4 b) 8/8 c) 2 6/8 d) 7/10 e) 5/3 f) 5 6/10 Q3) list as many equivalent fractions can you think of to the following fracions a) 1/2 b) 9/15 c)8/6 Q4) which is bigger a) 2/4 or 3/8 b) 3/9 or 4/6 c) 5/6 or 8/25 Q5) Fill in the missing numbers a) 2/4 = 6/- b) -/6 = 3/18 c) 9/18 = -/2
